I think that if a person is a drug addict then they should be in a mandatory drug treatment program. By them going to jail they are not really getting help for their drug problem. They need a program that is going to help them day by day so they can get over this problem. By a person sitting in jail it is not proving a point. They need to be somewhere where they can talk about their problems and get over the fact of them being drug addicts. Some people need someone they can talk to, so they can get things off their chest. Treatment alone can help a person.

Sadly, though, most people with substance abuse problems will enter a chemical dependency program and continue to relapse. I agree that jail is not really the answer, but most will need a long term program, some even a halfway house so that they will continue to have support but be able to face the world. If someone is very motivated and has a strong will, AA or NA is great.
